Femto Gateway - KDDI

Contela switched from MySQL to Altibase for its new HeNB Gateway solution of Femto service to KDDI. (due to MySQL’s poor performance and complicated configuration of replication.)

Who

KDDI Corporation is a Japanese telecommunications operator. KDDI provides mobile cellular services, ISP network, solution services, long-distance, international voice and data communications services.

Contela is a leading enterprise in the production of wireless communication equipment and cellular networks.

Problem

Due to the recent growth of smart phone usage and the explosion of network traffic, Contela’s existing communication stations reached maximum capacity. Contela installed Femto AP to try to manage its network distribution. However, Femto AP did not solve the problem, causing an urgent need for another solution.

HeNB GW had to manage information for over 60,000 Femto APs.

Femto AP had difficulty in replicating data in real time.

Configuration of replication for 8 MySQL databases was very complicated.

Its existing database, MySQL, did not reach the required performance level, and the response was delayed when a large amount of transactions occurred.

Solution

With Altibase, one single database is used instead of multiple databases in each HeNB GW server, making management more efficient. It now controls more than 60,000 Femto APs with much faster performance than MySQL.

Altibase needs only two servers instead of 8 required of MySQL to get the equivalent level of service and performance.

The reduction in the number of servers is possible via Altibase’s Replication Manager which is to easily and efficiently duplicate data nodes in servers.

Results

High quality service and capacity for Femto AP were further improved, which contributed to the service development in 3G and LTE.

Contela maintains service controls through the identification process from connected devices or from the business users.

Contela now provides personalized service which was not possible with Femto AP.

Its point of failure was reduced by over 87% as it manages only one database rather than multiple databases.

The control signal and data transmission between the core network and the terminal can be maintained smoothly and monitored in real time.
