Who
LG Uplus is one of the largest telecommunications companies in South Korea.

Problem
As with other telecommunications companies, LG Uplus did not want to be a victim of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and it was crucial to protect its network so that services would not be shut down or denied for legitimate users. A flood of incoming messages usually precedes DDoS attacks, and the company had to stay alert for any abnormal pattern of data traffic. In addition, it also had to monitor and detect users of heavy data usages, who were the ones that would exchange and transmit video or other multimedia files, resulting in burdening the system and eventually damaging network providers’ bottom lines. LG Uplus wanted to adopt a database that had the ability to monitor and detect abnormal data traffic in real time.
Solution
LG Uplus has adopted Altibase’s hybrid architecture since 2009. The company did not even consider on-disk databases at all, as it knew they would be totally incapable of meeting its requirements. Altibase in-memory feature has been instrumental in providing the data processing speed that the company wanted.
Results
LG Uplus is now able to detect abnormal data traffic in real time and act accordingly.
Altibase’s hybrid architecture was of great use to LG Uplus. It could analyze and detect abnormal patterns of data traffic, utilizing historical data stored on disk tables. The company did not have to purchase separate databases to store historical data, resulting in lower TCO.
